The Northern Territory Early Intervention Pilot Program (NTEIPP) workshops bring together police and community services, introducing practical resources and skills over three hours to better engage with young people and address binge drinking related harms.
The next workshop in Alice Springs is scheduled for the 8th and 22nd of February 2012.
Continuing Mediator Development (CMD) and Group Practice Sessions

The Community Justice Centre has released their 2012 calendar for Continuing Mediator Development (CMD) and Group Practice Sessions. CMD’s are open to all members of the public and provide professional development to practitioners and people seeking to gain exposure to mediation.
Sessions will count towards continuing accreditation requirements for Nationally Accredited mediators. Group Practice Sessions are held on the last Friday of every month in Darwin and enable trained mediators to brush up on their skills. Participants role-play scenarios with experienced coaches available to provide feedback.
The first CMD for 2012 will be held on 15 February and the topic will be Confidentiality in Mediation.

The Accidental Counsellor Workshop

Accidental counsellors are people who may not have formal qualification or counselling experience but find they are placed in a counselling role by accident. Drawing on Lifeline’s vast experience in crisis counselling, this two day workshop aims to provide non-counsellors with a range of skills to work effectively with people who may be distressed, agitated or in crisis. With a heavy emphasis on enhancing communication skills, the course gives participants a practical framework for managing these issues.

Urban Quest 2012 is coming! Following a successful debut in 2011, Mission Australia is once again presenting this celebration of young Territorian talent and community. – The competition is open to singers aged from 10 to 19 who can compete in vocal, street, rap and beatboxing categories.
Urban Quest heats will be held in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs during March. The top performers will then go through to the semi-final at Darwin’s Casuarina Square on 13 April, with the cream of the crop taking the Darwin Entertainment Centre stage on 15 April before guest judges, including “touchdown king” Mark Holden and Deni Hines.

safeTALK is a short, practical half day workshop which encourages suicide alert communities. Suicide is mostly preventable. Most people with thoughts of suicide want help to live and a small gesture of support can be life saving. The skills taught in safeTALK are designed to give participants a short clear process that anyone over the age of 15 can follow to become a suicide alert helper in the community.

ASIST is a 2 day workshop where the emphasis is on suicide ‘first aid’; helping a person with thoughts of suicide to stay safe and seek further help. The majority of people with suicidal thoughts will find some way to signal their distress and their intent to harm themselves. ASIST training can help us see and respond to these invitations for help.

On any given night in Australia 105,000 people are homeless and nearly half of these are under the age of 25. Youth Homelessness Matters Day aims to raise public awareness about youth homelessness and celebrate the resilience of young people who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness in Australia.

Want to be a DRUMBEAT facilitator? The DRUMBEAT Program is an early intervention program for ‘at-risk’ youth and adults that uses drumming to teach a range of social skills and lift self-esteem. The three day training program covers group facilitation skills, working with defiant youth, and the implementation of the DRUMBEAT program itself.
The training program is scheduled to be held in Darwin from 28 - 30 May 2012.

The 16th Annual Chronic Diseases Network Conference: “Promoting Healthy Childhood - Preventing Chronic Conditions,” will be held at the Darwin Convention Centre on the 20th – 21st of September 2012. The conference program will explore the range of factors during the early years that contribute to chronic diseases later in life. Chronic diseases can be the result of influences during pregnancy, childhood, or adolescence.
Influences on chronic conditions later in life include, but are not limited to, whether a mother smokes in pregnancy, a child’s diet and level of physical activity, exposure to domestic violence, parenting, and social determinants of health such as level of schooling, and the socioeconomic status of the family.
