Youth Off The Streets 2012 Scholarship Program
The Youth Off The Streets National Scholarship Program celebrates the gifts and strengths of young people from the Australian community who exhibit extraordinary promise, but who lack the personal support networks and resources that will allow them to fulfil that potential. The initiative developed by Father Chris Riley, CEO and founder of Youth Off The Streets, provides financial and personal support for young people to pursue their dreams in any field, including, but not limited to - visual or performing arts; sport; trade skills; and music. Nominations can be made by the young person themselves, or on their behalf by a teacher, Youth Worker or other party involved in the young person’s life. The closing date for nominations is 5pm on 6 April 2012.
Calling Young ATSI People to get involved in Constitutional Recognition
This March, the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) will be hosting a three day Constitutional Recognition Forum for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. The Forum will provide young Indigenous Australians (aged 16-25) from across the country with an opportunity to come together to learn about Constitutional Recognition and develop a youth driven campaign. They would like to have each state and territory represented, and they need our support to promote this fantastic opportunity to the young ATSI people that the NTYAN work with and support.

Research Messages 2011 is a collection of summaries of research projects published by The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) ) in 2011. The publication also has an overview essay that captures the themes and highlights from the research for the year, including, but not limited to - the initial education and training of young people and their pathways to employment; apprenticeships and traineeship completion statistics / research; trends in the labour market and more!
NAPLAN Achievement - National Report for 2011
The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests are conducted in May each year for all students across Australia in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students in the same year level are assessed on the same test items in the assessment domains of Reading, Persuasive Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy. The 2011 NAPLAN National Report has been released.
Early Signs of Psychosis in Young People
A person with psychosis ‘loses touch with reality’: they may have disorganised thoughts, hallucinations or delusions and find it difficult to interact with others. In young people many psychotic illness occur as a result of depression or experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Peer Teaching as a Strategy for Conflict Management and Student Re-engagement in Schools
This article reports on a major action research program that experimented with the use of cross-age peer teaching in schools to assist teachers to manage conflict issues in their classrooms, and to re-engage disaffected students in learning. The research, which was conducted in a range of elementary and secondary schools in Australia, was part of a larger international project using conflict resolution concepts and techniques combined with drama strategies to address cultural conflict in schools.
Now Recruiting for Inspiring Young Indigenous Runners
The New York City Marathon is one of the toughest and biggest running events in the world, with 48,000 runners and 2.5 million spectators. The Indigenous Marathon Project team are seeking outstanding Indigenous men and women aged between 18 and 30, that have the commitment and ability to train for this endurance running event. They will be coached and supervised by Australian marathon champion, Rob de Castella, be required to attend a number of training camps around Australia during the year, and undertake a special Cert III in Community Recreation – Indigenous Health.
NT Women’s Award in Human Rights
In conjunction with International Women’s Day 2012, the Northern Territory Council for Human Rights Education (NTCHRE) is organising an Awards Night on 9 March 2012 at Charles Darwin University from 6pm-9pm. The purpose of this public event is to recognise Northern Territory women who have made significant contribution to the advancement of human rights. The event will also welcome guest speaker Samah Hadid, 2010 Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations, who will speak about the role of women in human rights.
Anti-Discrimination Training Program
The Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Commission provides a range of programs designed to educate management, staff and the general public. You can attend training in Darwin or at a regional or remote centre, or they can customise training to meet your organisational requirements and come to you. An information flyer listing their scheduled training sessions up until June 2012 has just been released.

DASSAN Visitor Training
There are currently 1100 adults and young people in detention (145 are children). The Darwin Asylum Seekers Support and Advocacy Network (DASSAN) will be holding a visitor training session on Monday 6 February, 2012. They have many requests for visitors from people in detention, and very soon they will be facilitating visits at the Wickham Point Immigration Detention Centre. Would you like to become involved and assist in brightening the day for those who are in detention?
Youth in Communities
The objectives of the Youth in Communities measure are to deliver a comprehensive youth strategy in the Northern Territory that provides an effective diversion for young Indigenous people from at risk behaviours; improves life choices and outcomes for young Indigenous people; and improves the youth services infrastructure. Many projects have been funded throughout the Northern Territory by the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) under this initiative. FaHCSIA have a very transparent process, and project information is publicly available on their website.
Youth Development Officer – Job Vacancy in Docker River
NPY Women’s Council Youth Team has a position vacant as a Youth Development Officer based in Docker River, Northern Territory. As part of the NPY Women’s Council Youth Program team, the Youth Development Officer will be responsible for the development and implementation of the Youth Program at NPYWC member communities. Applications close 10 February, 2012.
National Youth Week Opening and Closing Celebrations Grant Round 2012
REMINDER: The Office of Youth Affairs has partnered with beyondblue: the national depression initiative, and is pleased to announce that a total of $7500 one off beyondblue funding is available for the National Youth Week (13 – 22 April, 2012) Opening or Closing Celebrations in the Darwin region. Applications close 16 February, 2012.
“Promoting Healthy Childhood – Preventing Chronic Conditions”
The 16th Annual Chronic Diseases Network Conference: “Promoting Healthy Childhood - Preventing Chronic Conditions,” will be held at the Darwin Convention Centre on the 20th – 21st of September 2012. The conference program will explore the range of factors during the early years that contribute to chronic diseases later in life. Chronic diseases can be the result of influences during pregnancy, childhood, or adolescence. The CDN Co-ordinator and Chair of the Conference Organising Committee would like to encourage everyone to take up the opportunities that this conference will offer, by sponsoring, presenting or registering to attend.
SACS Award Update
On 22 December 2011, Fair Work Australia granted an application by the Australian Services Union to further delay the transition to the new classification structure of the Social, Community, Home Care & Disability Services Industry Award for workers employed under SACS and Crisis Accommodation classifications. The transition had previously been postponed to February 2012, and now will not occur until 1 July 2012. This is due to the Equal Pay Case. (Workers employed in Home Care and Family Day Care classifications will still transition to the new classifications and loadings from 1 February 2012).
The Accidental Counsellor Workshop
Accidental counsellors are people who may not have formal qualification or counselling experience but find they are placed in a counselling role by accident. Drawing on Lifeline’s vast experience in crisis counselling, this two day workshop aims to provide non-counsellors with a range of skills to work effectively with people who may be distressed, agitated or in crisis. With a heavy emphasis on enhancing communication skills, the course gives participants a practical framework for managing these issues.
ASIST - Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
ASIST is a 2 day workshop where the emphasis is on suicide ‘first aid’; helping a person with thoughts of suicide to stay safe and seek further help. The majority of people with suicidal thoughts will find some way to signal their distress and their intent to harm themselves. ASIST training can help us see and respond to these invitations for help.
safeTALK - Suicide Alertness for Everyone
safeTALK is a short, practical half day workshop which encourages suicide alert communities. Suicide is mostly preventable. Most people with thoughts of suicide want help to live and a small gesture of support can be life saving. The skills taught in safeTALK are designed to give participants a short clear process that anyone over the age of 15 can follow to become a suicide alert helper in the community.
Compass ABC TV – Seeking Young People to Make a “Holy Switch”
Compass ABC TV is looking for 6 young people to make a “Holy Switch.” They are looking for young adults (18-23yrs) from around Australia, who are part of a family who puts faith at the heart of daily life. For two weeks (between March and May, 2012) these young people will take up the challenge to live a totally different life with a host family from another faith.
