WELL Resource Kit - Core Skills
Do you know of any young people that could benefit from some additional language, literacy and numeracy support in the workplace? This comprehensive and easy-to-use Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) resource kit is mapped up to Level 3 against the Australian Core Skills Framework, it is contextualised to the Community Services and Health industries, but flexible enough to be used in other industries. The resource is ideally suited for supporting Core Skills in the workplace without the specific need for a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) expert.

Specialist Homelessness Information Platform (SHIP) Update
In July 2011 the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) implemented the new Specialist Homelessness Services (SHS) data collection in order to provide a better picture about pathways into and out of homelessness as well as the assistance provided by homelessness services. To support agencies reporting as part of the SHS collection, AIHW in partnership with Infoxchange Australia developed a new online client management system. Since its launch six months ago, the Specialist Homelessness Information Platform (SHIP) has helped over 6650 staff from over 1100 homelessness agencies input client information, manage case notes, develop case plans, as well as record and report SHS data.
Understanding Childism: Are We Prejudiced Against Children?
A great tragedy of 2011 was the sudden death of Elizabeth Young-Bruehl a month before the publication of her book, Childism: Confronting Prejudice Against Children, released January 10th. Not only was this the loss of a great mind, but also the opportunity for her to represent her very important ideas, ones that are likely to cause some controversy, in public discussion.

Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry into Youth Suicides
On Monday 30 January 2012, Tylee Wirth from the Youth Minister’s Round Table participated in the Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry into Youth Suicides as the Katherine representative. She would like to encourage everyone who is in the Katherine region to consider attending the Katherine Public Hearing on the Inquiry which will be held on Monday 6 February from 1 – 4 pm in the Katherine Town Council Chambers.
NT Early Intervention Program (NTEIPP) – Alice Springs
The Northern Territory Early Intervention Pilot Program (NTEIPP) workshops bring together police and community services, introducing practical resources and skills over three hours to better engage with young people and address binge drinking related harms. The next workshop in Alice Springs is scheduled for the 8th and 22nd of February 2012.
NT Youth Issues Survey
Tylee Wirth from the Youth Minister’s Round Table of Young Territorians needs our support! She is keen to find out what young people aged 12-25 consider to be the “most important” issues in their community / region through the completion of a short survey. The NTYAN has close contact with a diverse range of young people across a number of regions. Your assistance to promote this survey to the young people you work with and / or that are in your care would be greatly appreciated.
DRUMBEAT Program - Darwin
Want to be a DRUMBEAT facilitator? The DRUMBEAT Program is an early intervention program for ‘at-risk’ youth and adults that uses drumming to teach a range of social skills and lift self-esteem. The three day training program covers group facilitation skills, working with defiant youth, and the implementation of the DRUMBEAT program itself. The training program is scheduled to be held in Darwin from 28 - 30 May 2012.
Come and Try Tennis - Darwin
Tennis NT welcomes school-aged kids (5-9 yrs) and teenagers (10 + years) to come and try tennis at the Darwin Waterfront this Sunday, 29 January, 2012 from 2pm – 5pm. The Come and Try Tennis event is a great opportunity for young people to learn a fun new sport. The event is FREE. Bring sunscreen, hat, bathers and towel to cool off afterwards in the Recreation Lagoon.
New AYAC Website Competition
The Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC) needs your help! They are seeking an engaging name for their new website that expresses its functionality, but is also original and catchy. The winning entry will receive a $50 iTunes voucher. The competition closes 29 February, 2012.
AYAC to Create “Resource Bank”
The Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC) has begun work with the Australian Clearinghouse for Youth Studies to develop a case study “resource bank” on a range of innovative youth work practices, services and projects. The case studies will aim to connect with what’s innovative, what’s working and capture the energy and passion of the sector. AYAC is now in the process of connecting with various groups and organisations to begin interviewing and compiling the case studies. Want to be involved? AYAC are keen to hear from you.
Social Media Bootcamps
Dialogue Consulting are running a series of two day Social Media Bootcamps in a number of capital cities across Australia, aimed particularly at youth organisations, non-profits and LGA’s. Case Worker Job Vacancy – Alice Springs
A full time permanent position is available with the Gap Youth Centre as a Case Worker on their Reconnect Program. The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting young people aged 12 - 18 years who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and at risk of losing connection with their families, education, employment and the community. Applications close on 3 February, 2012.
3rd Annual National Juvenile Justice Summit 2012
The 3rd Annual National Juvenile Justice Summit 2012 will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to hear from key state government representatives and youth justice organisations on the significant issues moving forward for juvenile justice in Australia. The Summit will draw together a cross section of the nation’s leaders in juvenile justice to discuss effective practice; highlight any major developments in each of the jurisdictions, and; showcase some of the new and innovative strategies being implemented across the country. The summit is scheduled for 26-27 March 2012 at the Rendezvous Hotel in Melbourne.

Energy Drinks: Health Risks and Toxicity
The new millennium has ushered in a wave of synthetic, caffeinated high-energy drinks targeted at the youth market. Over the past 10 years, the consumption of caffeinated beverages intended to “energise” has increased significantly. A paper recently published in the Medial Journal of Australia describes the epidemiology and toxicity of caffeinated energy drink exposures in Australia.
