A New Ten Year Plan for Mental Health
The Australian Government is currently seeking public opinion on a draft ten year roadmap for national mental health reform via an online survey. The survey will be available from 16 January 2012 until 7pm AEDST 1 February 2012.
Out of Home Care - What’s your Views?

Welfare Payments & School Attendance
Late last year, Pam Reilly from the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA) radio spoke to Central Australian Aboriginal human rights campaigner, Barb Shaw. They spoke on Strong Voices, after the Federal Government flagged moves to link welfare payments to school attendance. A copy of the interview has recently been uploaded to their website.
The Growing Up Our Way Resource
The Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC) is the national non government peak body in Australia representing the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families. The SNAICC Resource Service has recently produced a document titled “The Growing Up Our Way: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Rearing Practices Matrix” This resource provides a snapshot of some of the values, beliefs and practices informing the ‘growing up’ of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children across Australia.
Outdoor Youth Programs Research Alliance – Survey
The Outdoor Youth Programs Research Alliance (OYPRA) is seeking input from outdoors and camps professionals to participate in this important Australian research. To ensure that your knowledge and experience is captured in the national picture, contribute by completing an online survey to help identify effective ways of promoting resilience, learning and wellbeing among young people through outdoor and nature-based programs.
Indigenous Youth Career Pathways Program
The Australian Government is providing $50.7 million over four years from 2011-12 to 2014-15 for the Indigenous - Youth Career Pathways (IYCP) Program. The IYCP Program will commence from the 2012 school year and focus on the provision of school based traineeships and associated support activities to Indigenous students in Years 11 and 12 and, in some circumstances, year 10 Indigenous students.
Working with Sibling Sexual Abuse (Gatehouse Centre)
Cindy Tarczon, a Research Officer at the Australian Centre for the Study of Sexual Assault (ACSSA), recently interviewed Helen Kambouridis, a Senior Psychologist at the Gatehouse Centre for the Assessment and Treatment of Child Abuse at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. In the interview, Ms Kambouridis talks about sibling sexual assault, the treatment for children and young people with sexually abusive behaviour, family-based therapy, the role of shame for perpetrators, and the impact on parents.
More than $260 Million for Smarter Schools across Australia
Students and staff in schools across the country are set to benefit from a $263.3 million funding boost under the Gillard Government’s Smarter Schools National Partnerships. On the 14th of January 2012, School Education Minister Peter Garrett released the latest progress reports from state and territory governments, outlining the achievements in the first six months of 2011.
New Website to Tackle Cyberbullying
On the 13th of January 2012, The Gillard Labor Government launched a new website to tackle cyberbullying and help more young people stay safe online. The new website provides cybersafety information for 26 social networking sites, search engines and online games, and gives step by step instructions on how to report cyberbullying, abuse and inappropriate content on these sites. It also provides clear information for parents, educators and young people on how to adjust privacy settings on websites as well as tips on how to stay safe when using any social media site.
Australian Apprenticeships Mentoring Program
The Australian Apprenticeships Mentoring Program seeks to improve Australian Apprenticeship retention rates through the provision of approximately $80 million over four years to support targeted mentoring and assistance to Australian Apprentices. The Mentoring Program is targeted at industries and occupations with current or emerging skills need and Australian Apprentices who may face barriers to participation (e.g. Indigenous Apprentices or Apprentices in remote locations).
Tune In Not Out
Tune In Not Out provides 24hr TV for life’s challenges from mental to sexual health. Tune In Not Out brings videos, factsheets, real stories and blogs from across Australia into one central point for young people to explore. The content is created for and by young people. So if you are aged 16-25 and want to get involved for 10 minutes, a whole day or every week, the Tune In Not Out team welcome your involvement from blogs, marketing, social media to video creation and more.
Remote Schools Pathways Grant 2012
Funding is available from the NT Department of Education and Training (DET) to help remote schools develop work experience and enterprise programs for students with a disability.
Back to School Payment Scheme 2012
The Back to School Payment Scheme has been established by the Northern Territory Government to help families offset the beginning of year expenses that come with providing the best education for students such as cost of textbooks, stationery, school uniforms, excursions, and travel costs associated with school such as the Student ID cards.
Grass Roots Development Grants - ROUND 2
The Grass Roots Development Grant – ROUND 2 is now open! Organisations (including clubs, groups, service deliverers, shire and municipal councils) can apply for up to $3 000 to implement a new sport or recreation program, or increase the capacity of their organisation to deliver sport or recreation services/programs. Applications close 30 January 2012.

Beyondblue National Priority Driven Research Program - ROUND 2
beyondblue is seeking applications for the beyondblue National Priority Driven Research (NPDR) program - ROUND 2. This national, competitive grant program aims to fund quality research in depression and anxiety in key priority areas: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and intersex people; men (aged 12–65 years). Grants of up to $300,000 per project are available. Projects must be two years’ duration or less. Closing date is 28 February 2012.
Vulnerable Groups Worker – Job Vacancy in Alice Springs
Waltja Tjutangku Palyapayi (WALTJA) has a full time permanent Vulnerable Groups Worker position available. The successful applicant will undertake emergency relief case work, data collection and remote project field trips with Aboriginal people and their families across the Central Desert region. Target groups will include but not be limited to people in emergency situations or financial crisis, young people ‘at risk’ and frail aged and disabled clients. The position aims to build the financial resilience of clients and working closely with regular clients and other services will be an important part of this position. Applications close on 18 February, 2012.
Tools and Resources to Prevent Child Abuse & Neglect
In addition to NAPCAN’s Mandatory Reporting training sessions, they are now launching another new exciting training program - “Tools and Resources to Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect: Engaging Vulnerable Kids and Families.” Initial sessions will be held in Darwin (Thursday 8 March) and Nhulunbuy (Tuesday 29 May) with a view to expanding the program to Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine in the second half of 2012 depending on the level of expressed interest. Workshops are FREE and run for two hours.

Darwin Support Worker’s Forum
The next Darwin Support Workers Forum will be held at the Somerville Community Services Inc. training room in Wagaman on Thursday 19th January 2012 from 1pm-3pm. The original date for January’s forum falls on Australia day so the forum has been brought forward a week. In addition to the forum being a great opportunity for networking, Tracey Myles from Autism NT will also be presenting valuable information to attendees. Somerville Community Services Inc. have requested that NTYAN extend the invitation out through the network. All are welcome by return RSVP.
