Second Phase of Desert - City Partnership
In late 2011, Desert Knowledge Australia (DKA), in partnership with the Menzies Foundation and The Ian Potter Foundation, held three workshops to gear up philanthropic organisations from the East Coast and non-profit organisations from central Australia to improve the relationship and understanding between the Non for Profit and Philanthropic sector. The aims of the workshops were to facilitate improved collaboration between the two sectors in order to achieve higher investment and impact in central Australia. A workgroup was created, and Terms of Reference developed. This project is now moving into the second phase of its development, and a call has gone out to those in the central Australian region, inviting participation.

Do you know of any young Territorians that are keen to develop their skills in the music industry? A nationwide and award winning initiative, 351 Camp is an intensive & inspirational 3 days of music , workshops and performances aimed at engaging, supporting, encouraging and empowering young musicians with the tools they need to achieve their full potential. Young people work together with well known artists to write, record and perform their own songs and to learn more about themselves and the Australian music industry while discovering ways to put positive ideas into action. Registrations are NOW OPEN for 351 Camp 2012. Early bird rate closes on March 30th 2012.
Youth Development Worker – Job Vacancy in Central Australia
The Walpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) has a full time position available for a Youth Development Worker. They are offering the opportunity for the successful applicant to become part of their nationally acclaimed community response program to substance misuse. The primary role of the Youth Worker will be to provide a program of youth diversionary and development activities for Warlpiri youth. The successful applicant will be part of a supportive team of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff that works with the community to provide essential youth services. Applications close May 6, 2012.
LSAY Derived Variables
This technical report describes the 24 derived variables developed for users of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) data. These variables help to simplify the use of the data and provide useful indicators for analysis. They fall into the categories of education, employment and social. Information for the 24 derived variables developed for the 1998, 2003 and 2006 commencing cohorts is presented.
National Anti Racism Strategy Consultation
REMINDER: Dr Helen Szoke, the Race Discrimination Commissioner from the Australian Human Rights Commission, would like to invite you to attend a consultation in Darwin on 19 April 2012 as part of developing the National Anti-Racism Strategy. The aim of the Strategy is to promote a clear understanding in the Australian community of what racism is and how it can be prevented and reduced. The Australian Government committed to developing a National Anti-Racism Strategy as part of Australia’s multicultural policy, The People of Australia. It is anticipated that the Strategy will be launched in July 2012 and implemented between 2012 and 2015.
Do you know a Community Hero?
In tomorrow’s edition, the Katherine Times is introducing a new weekly column called ‘Community Hero’ to celebrate people in the Katherine region who know the true meaning of community spirit, who aim to make the town a better place for everyone, who are quiet achievers and deserve to be applauded.
The Katherine Times are looking to introduce a new ‘hero’ every week, and are requesting nominations of people who deserve recognition. Do you know of any young community heroes who are worthy of a nomination? Nominate them, and let them know how special and inspirational they truly are!

It is a very exciting time for CREATE in the NT, with the Alice Springs Office Launch occurring at the Alice Springs Youth Hub on Friday 27 April, 2012. YouthWorx NT in Katherine have announced that an event has been planned for Thursday 19 April 2012 to bring Katherine musicians together in the one place to find out what musicians are in town, and promote a collective voice for future funding of a music festival. If you work with youth in the Katherine region, please promote this fantastic opportunity to any young musicians that you know of.
National Drug Action Week – Katherine
Wurli- Wurlinjang is hosting drug action week in Katherine from 17 -23 June, 2012. They would like to invite other agencies that share an interest in this activity to come along and get involved and participate in the planning committee. A meeting to begin the planning is being held on Monday 30 April, 2012.
Northern Territory Young People Spread Respect
As part of Youth Week, the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) is launching an NT wide respectful relationship campaign - SPREAD RESPECT - a snapshot of young people’s messages created through the Love BiTES Program so far.
As part of this launch, NAPCAN have been sharing some of the experiences of facilitators and young people who have been involved in Love BiTES, with a particular focus on the youth-led campaign aspect of the program.
Youth NT Conference 2012 – Call for Guest Speakers / Workshop Facilitators
The Office of Youth Affairs (OYA) has publicly announced a call for guest speakers and workshop facilitators for the inaugural Youth Northern Territory Conference, to be held from 1-2 October 2012 at the Darwin Convention Centre. OYA strongly encourages the involvement of young people as guest speakers and/or workshop facilitators for this conference. The closing date for expressions of interest is COB Friday 11 May 2012.
Australian Alcohol Poll - No End in Sight to Nation’s Woes
On 17 April 2012, the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) launched its nation-wide Annual Alcohol Poll in Sydney. The Poll provides an insight into Australia’s attitudes towards alcohol, and keeps the FARE team connected to how Australians feel about the way that we drink and its impacts on the community. The Homeless Short Film Competition 2012 - Now Open!
The Homeless Short Film Competition focusses on Youth Homeless. Entry to the Competition is open to all secondary school students aged between 12-18 years. The film can be a documentary, drama, animation, photo montage or a combination of these. The film can be about any aspect of Youth Homelessness, but must not be any longer than three minutes including all credits. The successful film maker(s) can win a share in $25,000 for their school as well as student prizes. The Competition is being run by Shark Island Productions and The Caledonia Foundation (the “Promoter”), and closes at 5pm AEST on Friday 14 September 2012.

2012 Rock & Water Workshop – Darwin
The three day Rock and Water workshop program, presented by Gadaku Institute and the Family Action Centre, offers educators a new way to interact with students through physical / social teaching. The program teaches: practical Anti-Bullying strategies; alternatives to aggressive verbal and physical responses to fear and doubt; thinking and being in control through grounding, centeredness and mental focus; and last but not least self respect, self control and self confidence. The workshop is scheduled to be held in Darwin from 6-8 June, 2012.
Relevant Training Available for Workers in the Youth Sector
Charles Darwin University (CDU) in a trial partnership with Family Planning Welfare Association NT (FPWNT) is offering training in unit CHCCED511A “Develop, implement and review sexual and reproductive health education programs.” There are several free positions available with FPWNT, and the NT Department of Health also has some funded places available if participants are enrolled in the Certificate IV in Population Health (conditions apply). Training in this unit has career relevance for Youth Workers, Family Support Workers, Outreach Workers, Aboriginal Community Workers, and other relevant occupations in the youth sector. The training is for two days commencing on 30 April, 2012.
Big Applause for 2012 Battle of the School Bands Winners
In a media release on 13 April, Gerry McCarthy Minister for Arts and Museums and Acting Minister for Education and Training, congratulated the band N.E.A.L Boys for winning the 2012 Battle of the School Bands competition. N.E.A.L. Boys from Yirrkala Community Education Centre beat eight other bands from across the Territory to win the competition and will now play at BASSINTHEGRASS on Saturday 26 May at Darwin Amphitheatre, alongside some of the nation’s biggest music acts.
