NT Women’s Award in Human Rights
In conjunction with International Women’s Day 2012, the Northern Territory Council for Human Rights Education (NTCHRE) is organising an Awards Night on 9 March 2012 at Charles Darwin University from 6pm-9pm. The purpose of this public event is to recognise Northern Territory women who have made significant contribution to the advancement of human rights. The event will also welcome guest speaker Samah Hadid, 2010 Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations, who will speak about the role of women in human rights.
DASSAN Visitor Training
There are currently 1100 adults and young people in detention (145 are children). The Darwin Asylum Seekers Support and Advocacy Network (DASSAN) will be holding a visitor training session on Monday 6 February, 2012. They have many requests for visitors from people in detention, and very soon they will be facilitating visits at the Wickham Point Immigration Detention Centre. Would you like to become involved and assist in brightening the day for those who are in detention?
SACS Award Update
On 22 December 2011, Fair Work Australia granted an application by the Australian Services Union to further delay the transition to the new classification structure of the Social, Community, Home Care & Disability Services Industry Award for workers employed under SACS and Crisis Accommodation classifications. The transition had previously been postponed to February 2012, and now will not occur until 1 July 2012. This is due to the Equal Pay Case. (Workers employed in Home Care and Family Day Care classifications will still transition to the new classifications and loadings from 1 February 2012).
National Youth Week 2012 – Need Some Help?
If you’re having an event for National Youth Week 2012 - then The Frank Team might be able to help you make your job easier. The Frank Team can assist by delivering key project management skills to young people, and getting them motivated and inspired through the creation of awesome action plans that enable young people to take ownership of their project(s) from start to finish. They can also assist by teaching young people how to work together effectively as a team, promote their events using social media, and more!
Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry into Youth Suicides
On Monday 30 January 2012, Tylee Wirth from the Youth Minister’s Round Table participated in the Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry into Youth Suicides as the Katherine representative. She would like to encourage everyone who is in the Katherine region to consider attending the Katherine Public Hearing on the Inquiry which will be held on Monday 6 February from 1 – 4 pm in the Katherine Town Council Chambers.
NT Youth Issues Survey
Tylee Wirth from the Youth Minister’s Round Table of Young Territorians needs our support! She is keen to find out what young people aged 12-25 consider to be the “most important” issues in their community / region through the completion of a short survey. The NTYAN has close contact with a diverse range of young people across a number of regions. Your assistance to promote this survey to the young people you work with and / or that are in your care would be greatly appreciated.
AYAC to Create “Resource Bank”
The Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC) has begun work with the Australian Clearinghouse for Youth Studies to develop a case study “resource bank” on a range of innovative youth work practices, services and projects. The case studies will aim to connect with what’s innovative, what’s working and capture the energy and passion of the sector. AYAC is now in the process of connecting with various groups and organisations to begin interviewing and compiling the case studies. Want to be involved? AYAC are keen to hear from you.
Out of Home Care - What’s your Views?
Insight on SBS television is keen to speak to people about their ‘out of home care’ experiences. Have you, or anyone you know, had experience with Australia’s out of home care system? Insight, Australia’s leading forum for ideas and discussion, is looking at the pros and cons of removing children from their families and placing them in temporary care.
Welfare Payments & School Attendance
Late last year, Pam Reilly from the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA) radio spoke to Central Australian Aboriginal human rights campaigner, Barb Shaw. They spoke on Strong Voices, after the Federal Government flagged moves to link welfare payments to school attendance. A copy of the interview has recently been uploaded to their website.
SOCCER Coordinator Wanted!
Multicultural Youth NT have been organising weekly soccer matches with young people in detention and are looking for a new person to coordinate this. It is pretty simple to run - everything is set up. Can you help, or do you know of anyone who might be interested?

Are you a parent who wants to be more “in control” when parenting your child? What works in managing difficult child behaviour? How can you become more attuned to your child’s emotions and feelings? CatholicCareNT are running a course for parents in February 2012.
Young Carers Project (YCP) Survey
The Mental Health Council of Australia (MHCA) has launched a survey targeting young mental health carers on Facebook. If you’re a young person between 13 and 18 years of age and care for someone with a mental illness, MHCA want to hear about your experiences. To thank you for your time in completing their survey, they will send you a pre-paid VISA card charged to the value of $20. The survey ends on January 31, 2012.
Perspective - UN Youth Australia’s Journal of Youth Opinion
Perspective is a publication dedicated to passions and opinions of young Australians. The aim of the publication is to give a voice to young people with a talent for expressing themselves and who have something to say about the community, country and world they live in. The Editor in Chief, Jamila Fontana, is now calling for submissions.

Public Hearing: Select Committee of Inquiry into Youth Suicides in the NT - Katherine
The Select Committee of Inquiry into Youth Suicide will be visiting Katherine on Monday 6 February 2012. The Chair of the Youth ITCG will be having a meeting with the committee in the morning. A public hearing will be held from 1pm – 4pm. People and agencies wishing to attend this hearing are encouraged to go to the Katherine Town Council Chambers on Monday 6 February.
Where are they now? Round Table Alumni Report
Since 1997, approximately 240 young people have participated in the Youth Minister’s Round Table of Young Territorians program. To celebrate this achievement, the Office of Youth Affairs (OYA) aims to produce an Alumni publication which will incorporate information provided by past and present members. The Alumni publication will be released in April 2012 and will be made available online.
More than $3 million to address family violence in Alice Springs
The Australian and Northern Territory Governments will invest more than $3 million in a pilot project to reduce family violence and help make homes, families and communities in Alice Springs safer.
Secure Care Facilities for Youth
Construction of secure care facilities promised by the Northern Territory Government’s funding commitment in 2009 of $13.9 million capital and $11.4 million operational, is well underway. The services, to benefit young people with complex needs and adults with a cognitive disability, will start to become operational in 2012. Construction of the Darwin Stabilisation and Assessment Facility has recently been completed and recruitment for this service has commenced.
