Aboriginal Youth Role Models Gaining Skills

An innovative collaboration between the Roper Gulf Shire Council and the Council for Aboriginal Alcohol Program Services (CAAPS) has brought 12 aspiring youth workers from Roper Gulf Shire communities through the first half of an intensive Certificate III in Community Services Work. The youth workers have been studying in Katherine and then using their skills on the ground to support other young people in their communities to gain qualifications.

Challenges, Possibilities and Future Directions: Assessment of Australia’s Children’s Courts

The Children’s Court has always been a dynamic institution, however there has been little empirical research undertaken on the Children’s Court in Australia. There have been no Australian studies which focus on the perspectives of key stakeholders within the areas of juvenile justice and child welfare. This Northern Territory study is one of nine parallel studies-one covering each state and territory, and the ninth focusing on Australia as a whole. The aim of this study is to examine the contemporary status of, and challenges faced by Australia’s Children’s Courts both within child welfare and criminal jurisdictions through the perspectives of key stakeholders (e.g. the Children’s Court, Northern Territory Police Service, Magistrates Court, Department of Justice and Attorney-General, Legal Aid, government, and non-government organisations). The study aims to contribute to deliberations on policy, practice and future directions for Children’s Courts.

Young Women from Ngukurr Shine at Employment Pathways Camp

Seven vibrant young women from Ngukurr completed a Youth Pathways camp in Katherine on the 21st of October. Roper Gulf Youth Services in collaboration with CDEP delivered a camp that was highly successful in building the young women’s self esteem, and exposing them to employment pathways. The young women met professionals from art, administration, beauty and skin care industries.

Mataranka Station Stockman Camp Inspires Troubled Youngsters

Thirteen aspiring young stockmen from Roper Gulf Shire communities Numbulwar and Ngukurr completed the first half of their Certificate 1 in Rural Operations at Mataranka Station on Friday 29th October, 2010. The training is being delivered by Charles Darwin University over two week-long camps, the first at Mataranka Station, and the second to commence at the Katherine Rural College in late November.

Venndale: Transition After Care Facility in Katherine

Venndale now has a Transition After Care Facility in Katherine for clients exiting ANY Alcohol and Or Drug program. One of the biggest issues that Venndale has faced in recent times is the inability to be able to care for clients exiting the Venndale Program. We are continuously seeing re-admissions in to Venndale and from the discussion had with clients; we have found that boredom and lack of accommodation and resources are the main causes of relapse / re-offending.

Australia and the United States Partnership to Address Violence against Women Globally

Violence devastates the lives of millions of women and girls globally. It knows no socio-economic or educational boundaries. It is not particular to any society or culture. Globally, around 30 per cent of women and girls experience physical, psychological or sexual violence during their lifetime. Tragically, the incidence of violence is much higher in situations of armed conflict. This is simply unacceptable. Violence against women is a universal problem that must be universally condemned and addressed.

NAPCAN Survey Results: Community Attitude Survey on the Safety and Wellbeing of Children

Ahead of the week, NAPCAN has released the findings of our Community Attitude Survey on the Safety and Wellbeing of Children, which many of you took part in during National Child Protection Week 2009. The findings are alarming, especially given that respondents had a good understanding of child abuse and neglect issues. The results highlight the need to educate the whole community that protecting our children is everyone’s responsibility.
