UNSW Internet Study - How Young People View the World

The University of NSW (UNSW) is investigating how websites influence the way young people aged 12-18 view the world, and they’d like their input. It is almost impossible to exist without the internet these days. More than ever, young people are spending time online; for their social lives, entertainment and learning. Research has investigated the dark side of online sites and games, particularly the negative effects they can have on people under 18. Even though it puts the world at their fingertips, the internet has a bad reputation when it comes to ‘what is good for you.’

But the research team at UNSW are not convinced that’s the whole story, and would like the young people you work with to join the study to help them find out more about the internet, and how it impacts the way they think, react and interact with those around them. All they have to do is play.

New Youth Group to be Established in Katherine

The Katherine Regional Aboriginal Health and Related Services (KRAHRS) Healing Pathways Project team has been doing some research lately by talking with some of the local youth and those representing youth from Katherine and regional areas. As a result they consider a strong need start a youth group. This will be coordinated by the Katherine young person of the year (awarded January 2012), second year member to the Youth Minister’s Round Table, and KRAHRS very own Liaison Officer….Tylee Wirth!

Tylee and the team from KRAHRS would like to invite you BBQ lunch this Friday the 23rd of March to hear about the group and offer any support you can.

The Kids Are All Right forum is a new community forum where parents and carers of teenagers can communicate with each other, offer support and gain advice, on all the issues and challenges that come with this most interesting stage of life. There is also a calendar for each State and Territory where members can post events relevant to parenting teenagers – courses, workshops, etc – for parents or for teenagers.

NAICD 25 Anniversary Book of Positive Imagery & Stories

This year marks the 25th anniversary of National Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day, held annually on August 4. To commemorate this wonderful achievement, Secretariat for National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC) is producing a beautiful ‘coffee table’ book of photographs that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family and culture, every day, 365 days a year. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities and organisations across Australia are invited to contribute their own photos to the book. The aim is for the book to be jam-packed full of positive imagery and success stories showing children living strong in their culture, family and community. Can you contribute, and / or help to promote this?

Political Mapping Survey – AYAC

The Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC) is looking to develop their resources to make their political lobbying and campaigning more effective. For this they need your help with the completion of a short survey on our elected officials, the types of issues they care about, and their responsibilities to both office and party etc. With the information they receive from the survey they hope to apply a whole new level of strategy to their campaigns to ensure that the voice of young people and the youth sector is heard loud and clear in the halls of power! The National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) have boxes of t-shirts, hats, football shaped ‘stressballs’ and snap cards to give away. They were provided to them to distribute as part of the “Crossing The Line” Respectful Relationship campaign. Ellen Poyner has been distributing them to schools together with the bullying resource, and has some left-over. She’d love to give them to services who work with children and young people!

Reaching over 60 young people in the Territory who are living with Cancer, through the provision of over 25 programs. Stronger Futures in the NT

The Australian and Northern Territory Governments are working with Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory to build stronger futures. The Australian Government introduced legislation to Parliament on 23 November 2011 to tackle priority issues in the Northern Territory. This is known as the Stronger Futures legislative package. If passed, this package will replace the NT Emergency Response legislation. The new legislation is scheduled to be implemented in various towns and communities throughout the Northern Territory from July 2012. Information sessions will be held prior to implementation.

More Support for School Violence Inquiry Calls

Bridget Brennan from ABC Radio - 105.7 reported today (8/02/12) that the Association of Independent Schools has backed calls for an inquiry into violence in schools in the Northern Territory. The Education Union says violence is increasing and wants an independent review of attacks on teachers.

‘Know Your Rights’ Stakeholder Engagement Meeting - Katherine

An informal meeting between government agencies, legal aid services, financial counsellors and money management workers focusing on consumer and legal rights will be held in Katherine this Thursday 9 February 2012. The purpose of the meeting is to network, build relationships and discuss consumer and legal issues in the Katherine area at a ‘one-stop-shop’ event. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Anti-Discrimination Commission and the Northern Territory Legal Aid Commission, will be available in the one place to engage with local stakeholders.

Equal Pay Day Huge Win for Women

Almost 150,000 community sector workers, mostly women, have been awarded a pay rise by the industrial umpire in a landmark test case. The Fair Work decision comes after the Federal Government appealed to the industrial umpire in November for pay rises in the community sector which would be backed by a $2 billion funding commitment. Prime Minister Julia Gillard said at the time that community sector workers, who are mostly women, were underpaid and it was time they got equal pay for the work they did. About 120,000 of the sector’s 150,000 workers are women and employees mostly work in social services, welfare and the caring professions.
