2012 ACWA Conference – “Children’s Rights: What’s Right for Children?”
The Association of Children’s Welfare Agencies (ACWA) have their 2012 conference scheduled for 20-22 August (Sydney). An exciting and informative program is currently being developed around the central theme of “Children’s Rights: What’s Right for Children?” which will include a range of prominent speakers from both Australia and overseas. They are currently calling for abstracts. Abstract submissions close on 13 April 2012.
NTEIPP Kit Workshop – Alice Springs
The NT Early Intervention Pilot Program is holding an NTEIPP Kit Workshop on the 11th of April at the Youth Hub (old ANZAC Hill High School). The aims of the workshop are to facilitate partnerships between community services and police in order to address issues with youth binge drinking. Workshop content is evidence and strength based, and draws on Brief Intervention, Behaviour Change and Restorative Practice theory. The training is three hours in duration, and helps to build networks between police and local services.
Homelessness Research Conference
The Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) and RMIT University are pleased to co-host the inaugural Homelessness Research Conference in Melbourne on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 April 2012. The conference will showcase current homelessness research, and facilitate discussion to apply this evidence to contemporary policy and practice. It will also provide an opportunity to discuss and debate the future directions of research on homelessness.
Level 1 – Mediation & Conflict Resolution Course – Darwin
This interactive and stimulating 2 day course will assist professionals to explore conflict and impart the essential principles and process of mediation. The structured 5-step mediation model, specific conflict resolution skills and informal mediation variations will be presented and practiced. It will also identify the cultural considerations when mediating with Indigenous and CLD communities/ families. This course is endorsed by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and the Australian Psychological Society (APS). It is scheduled to be held in Darwin on 24 – 25 September, 2012.
Community Justice Centre – Mediator Training
Are you keen to learn about a proven mediation process adaptable to different types of mediations from highly skilled and experienced mediation practitioners? The Community Justice Centre offer a five day course which covers theoretical frameworks, communications skills, mediation role plays, practical methods for responding to power and emotional dynamics and personalised feedback. The next course is scheduled to be held in Darwin on 14 – 18 May, and in Alice Springs on 21 -25 May, 2012.
Social Media Bootcamps
Dialogue Consulting are running a series of two day Social Media Bootcamps in a number of capital cities across Australia, aimed particularly at youth organisations, non-profits and LGA’s. Narrative Therapy Training – Darwin / Alice Springs
Narrative therapy seeks to be a respectful, non-blaming approach to counselling and community work, which centres people as the experts in their own lives. It views problems as separate from people and assumes people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of problems in their lives. The one week workshop delivered by the Dulwich Centre, has been specifically designed for those who are relatively new to narrative ways of working, or those who have had some exposure to the ideas and would now like the opportunity to more rigorously engage with narrative practices. Human Services Training Advisory Council (HSTAC) has received funding to off-set the costs of this training. Places are limited!
Vicarious Trauma Counselling Skills Workshop – Alice Springs
In 2007, NSW Rape Crisis Centre was awarded the Work Cover NSW award for Best Solution to an Identified Workplace issue for its Vicarious Trauma Management Program. The Centre continue research into effective management strategies for this occupational health and safety risk and providing consultation and training packages to other agencies to assist with development of policy and practice that seeks to address this risk. Places are available for a 2 day Vicarious Trauma Counselling Skills Workshop that includes one day for Frontline and Management Staff, and one additional day for Management Staff. Human Services Training Advisory Council (HSTAC) has received funding to off-set the costs of this training. Places are limited! Sorry, the Darwin workshop is now full.
Supporting Young Parents – Core of Life Facilitator Training
Do you work with teenagers or families in your community? Can you help in building healthier families and stronger parenting communities? If you answered yes, then Core of Life Facilitator Training may interest you. Core of Life is a unique life-education program which helps young people to appreciate the reality of becoming pregnant, giving birth, feeding and parenting a baby ideally before they are pregnant! This ‘hands-on’ workshop will inspire you and be an opportunity for networking. It will teach you the skills needed to co-present Core of Life in schools or in the community. Training will take place over 2 days in Katherine on 21-22 May, 2012.
Authorised Persons Training
This 3 day training program is scheduled to be held in Katherine from the 3-5 April, 2012. It is for people who would like to become Volatile Substance Abuse (VSA) Authorised Persons because through their work, or other relationships in the community, they confront issues of VSA and would like to provide support and assistance to people that sniff, their families and the community. Authorised Persons training may be useful for people such as Community Patrol Workers or Youth Workers who are already working / volunteering with people who are intoxicated.
You are NOT committed to becoming an Authorised Person at the completion of training. The training will help you decide if it’s right for you, whilst also giving you valuable knowledge and skills to assist you in working or dealing with intoxicated people.
Sexual Assault Prevention Program for Secondary Schools (SAPPSS) Training
From 27 – 29 March 2012, Ruby Gaea and CASA House will be conducting a 3-day SAPPSS training program in Darwin for staff from schools and other sexual assault and community agencies. Part 1 of the program (delivered over 2 days) will provide you with an understanding of the SAPPSS model as a whole. It will also help prepare you to deliver the Year 9/10 student program within the model. Part 2 of the program (delivered over a half a day) will enable you to examine the prevalence, nature and consequences of sexual assault. It will also focus on the key issues relevant to providing an effective response to sexual assault within schools.
Free Kids Teaching Kids PD Session – Darwin
Kids Teaching Kids is a peer teaching and learning model that uses local environmental issues as the theme for learning. It’s free to be involved and upon registering you will receive an Education Kit including book and DVD. The session is for primary and secondary teachers, local government representatives, environmental organisations, rotary and lions clubs and anyone interested in implementing peer-teaching in their community. A Free Kids Teaching Kids PD Session will be held on Thursday 26 April, 2012 in Darwin.

Building Partnerships with Industry & Promoting Successful Pathways
VETnetwork Australia would like to invite vocational education coordinators, careers advisers, transition advisers, VET teachers, school executive, workplace learning coordinators, partnership brokers and employers to a networking event to consider, review and share ideas on partnerships to support young people in their journey to the workplace. The event will be taking place on 21 March 2012 at the Darwin Convention Centre.
NT Youth and Youth Sector Conference 2012
Last week the Minister for Young Territorians, Rob Knight announced that the Territory’s first Youth and Youth Sector Conference would be held at the Darwin Convention Centre on 1-2 October 2012. This inaugural NT conference aims to coordinate an event that is relevant, Territory focused, engaging, fun and discusses ideas that reflect the key issues facing both young people and the youth sector. The Office of Youth Affairs (OYA) would like to invite you to join their mailing list and get involved!
CDN Conference - “Promoting Healthy Childhood – Preventing Chronic Conditions”
The 16th Annual Chronic Diseases Network Conference: “Promoting Healthy Childhood - Preventing Chronic Conditions,” will be held at the Darwin Convention Centre on the 20th – 21st of September 2012. The conference program will explore the range of factors during the early years that contribute to chronic diseases later in life. Chronic diseases can be the result of influences during pregnancy, childhood, or adolescence.
Invitation to submit an abstract for a plenary session, workshop or concurrent session is now open. Closing Date is 4th May.

Dog Awareness – Staying Safe in Communities
Since 2003, Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities (AMRRIC) has been involved in delivering health and management programs in remote Indigenous communities. Because of this exceptional experience AMRRIC is able to offer a unique insight into the behaviour of camp dogs, and through a combination of education and practical demonstration, can better equip you and your staff to stay safe when working in communities.
NTEIPP Kit Workshop – Alice Springs
The NT Early Intervention Pilot Program is holding an NTEIPP Kit Workshop on the 21st of March at the Youth Hub in Alice Springs at 9:00am. These sessions introduce resources and information for increased support to young people at risk of alcohol related harm. These are free sessions that run for a minimal 3 hours bringing Police and Services together for a combined forum.
RAP Training – Katherine
Response Ability Pathways (RAP) is a training program that provides skills for working effectively with all young people and supporting them on pathways toward responsibility. RAP builds positive connections among young people and promotes a positive attitude toward them. So who is this training for? RAP is for teachers, parents, residential carers, youth workers and juvenile justice workers - anyone who wants to be more effective in working with young people. The next training session in Katherine will be held on 19-20 March, 2012.
Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention
The DCF Learning and Development Unit is pleased to fund 5 places on the Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention for the Department. Commencing on 30 April 2012 in both Alice Springs and Darwin. Applications close 5 March 2012.
