Federal Government Media Release 20 January, 2012:
The Hon Julie Collins MP commented that the report confirms the need for all levels of government to continue to work together to reduce and prevent child abuse and neglect. The AIHW report also highlighted the over representation of Indigenous children in all areas of the child protection system with Indigenous children 7.6 times more likely to be the subject of a child protection substantiation than non-Indigenous children. The Australian Government is also working with state and territory governments, as well as non-government organisations, to address the high rates of family violence and child protection in Indigenous communities, Ms Collins said.
