DRUMBEAT Program - Darwin

Published on January 30th 2012 - Filed under: Professional Development

The DRUMBEAT Program is an early intervention program for ‘at-risk’ youth and adults that uses drumming to teach a range of social skills and lift self-esteem.

Drumbeat was developed by the Holyoake Institute in Western Australia it is run in over 400 centres across Australia including primary and secondary schools, youth centres, mental health services, drug rehabilitation centres, and prisons.

The program is strongly evidence based and has attracted widespread interest across the country for its potential to engage young people of different cultural backgrounds and transfer learning through an experiential process that is non-competitive.

DRUMBEAT has proved particularly successful with Indigenous youth and others who are alienated from society.

The three day training is accredited as a group facilitation unit under the standards of National Training Authority and covers group facilitation skills, working with defiant youth, and the implementation of the DRUMBEAT program itself.

The program is scheduled to be held in Darwin from 28 - 30 May 2012.
