Mission Austratlia Research and Policy

Mission Australia released annual Youth Survey. Now in its 14th year, the Youth Survey is the biggest of its kind in Australia.

This year, 18,994 young people aged 15-19 years participated. Topics covered each year include: education and employment, sources of support, family, wellbeing, values and concerns.

This year, Mission Australia also included a special focus on barriers to further education and employment. Just over 50 percent of young people are confident of achieving their study and work aspirations but 52 percent reported perceived barriers, the top three of which were, in order:

  1. Academic ability
  2. Financial difficulty
  3. Lack of jobs

Other key findings include:

 • Young people identified the following as the most important issues in Australia today:

  1. Alcohol & drugs appeared as the top concern for the first time in 2015
  2. Equity & discrimination
  3. The economy & financial matters

 • Personal concerns identified are similar to our previous studies, the top three being:

  1. Coping with stress
  2. School or study problems
  3. Body image

The Survey provides a rich data set to inform program and policy development. The results this year highlight the need for coordinated responses to better support young people in their transitions from school to further education and employment.
